Sam was a dear friend. In 2013 he suffered a seizure while giving a lecture at the University of Indiana. He dead the next day.

I had a set of photos I had taken in El Salvador, Sam went through them and selected one, looked at it for a while. When he left he took the photo saying that he’d get it back to me.
